Every year, the legendary Castle Illuminations captivate thousands of spectators. When the ruins are bathed in a deep red glow and a brilliant firework display lights up the sky shortly after, Heidelberg offers one of Germany’s most magical summer nights.

Around 10:15 PM, Bengal flares immerse Heidelberg Castle in a mysterious red light—a tribute to the destructions of 1689 and 1693 by the troops of Louis XIV. As the glow fades, the grand fireworks display begins over the Neckar. This tradition dates back to 1613, when Elector Friedrich V welcomed his bride, Elizabeth Stuart, with a sea of lights.
